Multiple Jobs vs. Multiple Activity: Differences

The difference between holding several employee jobs and combining employee and self-employed work, and how Social Security contributions are split.

Combining more than one job is increasingly common, but Spain's Social Security system distinguishes between two different situations depending on the nature of that work, each with its own contribution rules.

What multiple employment (pluriempleo) is

This is the situation of someone who works simultaneously for two or more different companies, always as an employee, which creates an obligation to register and contribute independently for each of those employment relationships, within the same General Social Security Scheme.

What multiple activity (pluriactividad) is

This is the situation of someone who works, at the same time, as an employee and as self-employed, which means being registered simultaneously under two different Social Security schemes: the General Scheme (for employed work) and RETA (for self-employed activity).

How contributions are split in multiple employment

When the sum of your contribution bases across the different companies you work for exceeds the maximum contribution ceiling, a proration mechanism kicks in between the different employers, preventing contributions above that combined maximum, with a subsequent refund of any contributions overpaid if the proration wasn't correctly applied from the start.

The reduced-fee benefit in multiple activity

People in a multiple activity situation (employed and under RETA at the same time) can access, subject to certain income requirements, a reduction in their self-employed contribution during the year this situation occurs, in recognition of the fact that they're already contributing simultaneously through the General Scheme, which partly reduces the total combined burden of both contributions.

Why it's important to correctly report your situation

In both multiple employment and multiple activity, it's essential that each payer (or you yourself, for your self-employed activity) knows your full situation, both to correctly apply the contribution proration and to ensure income tax withholding is calculated properly, since having several payers reduces, as explained in another article, the income threshold above which you're required to file an income tax return.

How it affects your future benefits

Contributing simultaneously through two different channels (in multiple activity) can, in certain cases, give rise to a specific calculation method for certain benefits that takes both contributions into account, although the specific rules vary depending on the type of benefit and require a case-by-case analysis.
