When should you use this calculator?
Not all brokers charge the same way: some charge a fixed amount per buy or sell trade, others apply an annual custody fee on your portfolio, and some charge fixed fees if the account is inactive. This calculator lets you enter the fee structure of any two brokers and see which one is cheaper for your own portfolio and trading frequency. The fields are pre-filled with an example (€20,000 portfolio, 12 trades a year, one per month) using the fee schedules published by DEGIRO (broker 1) and XTB (broker 2) for shares and ETFs, verified in July 2026; replace the values with those of the actual brokers you're comparing and their current rates, since these change over time.
How it is calculated
Each broker's annual cost is calculated by adding three components: cost per trade multiplied by trades per year, the custody fee (a percentage of your invested portfolio), and any other fixed annual fee (e.g. for inactivity). Not every broker charges all three — many low-cost brokers don't charge custody, and some charge nothing per trade but do charge a fee if the account sees no activity.
Practical example
With the pre-filled example (DEGIRO: €2 per trade, no custody; XTB: €0 per trade up to €100,000/month traded, no custody below €250,000), the annual cost would be €24 with broker 1 and €0 with broker 2, a €24/year difference in favor of broker 2 for this specific profile (moderate portfolio and trading frequency). With a larger portfolio or different trading frequency, the result can change — that's why it's worth calculating with your own numbers rather than trusting a generic headline like "broker X is cheaper".
Legal and tax context
This calculator has no affiliate links and doesn't earn a commission for recommending any broker; the example data (DEGIRO and XTB) was verified on each broker's official fee pages in July 2026, but fees can change at any time — always check the current terms on the broker's official website before deciding, and also consider factors not captured here (investor protection, guarantee fund, platform quality, customer support, market availability).

Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator recommend a specific broker?
No. It's a neutral tool for you to compare any pair of brokers with their own fees; the DEGIRO and XTB values are just an illustrative example using public data, with no commercial arrangement behind them.
Why doesn't the result include currency conversion fees?
Because they depend on which markets you trade (domestic or foreign) and vary a lot between brokers; if you trade outside your usual currency, add that estimated cost to the corresponding broker's fixed annual fee.
How often should I review this comparison?
Broker fees change fairly often (promotions, fee changes). Before making a final decision, always verify the current rates on the broker's official website — don't rely solely on the pre-filled example.
