When should you use this calculator?

This template organizes your monthly finances into four blocks: income, fixed expenses, variable expenses and savings. Each category has a "budgeted" column (what you plan to spend) and an "actual" column (what you really spend), with a difference column that calculates itself. At the end of the month you'll see at a glance which categories you drifted from your plan.

How it is calculated

The totals (total income, total expenses and monthly balance) use sum formulas that recalculate automatically whenever you change any figure — no manual addition needed. The final balance is the difference between your total income and total expenses for the month; if it's positive, that's the amount left over to save or invest that month.

Practical tips

Adapt the categories to your case: add or remove fixed or variable expense rows for your own line items, and each month only update the "actual" column as you track your spending. If you want to see how much that leftover monthly saving could grow, you can use this site's compound interest calculator or savings goal calculator with that figure.
