Spain Parental Leave Pay Calculator

Calculate how much you will receive during birth and childcare leave in Spain: what Social Security pays you each month, for how many weeks and in total.

Including extra payments. It is used to estimate your contribution base if you don't have it.

Shown on your payslip for the month before the birth. If you enter it, it is used instead of the salary.

When should you use this calculator?

Use it before your baby is born to know how much you will receive and plan your leave, especially if both parents are sharing the flexible weeks. It works for the birth mother and the other parent alike, and for adoption, guardianship or foster care.

How it is calculated

Spanish Social Security pays 100% of your regulatory base: your common-contingencies contribution base for the month before the birth divided by 30, for each day of leave. Each parent gets 19 weeks: 6 mandatory weeks right after the birth, 11 that can be spread until the baby turns one, and 2 that can be used until the child turns 8. Single parents get 32 weeks, and each extra baby in a multiple birth or a disability adds one more week per parent.

Practical example

On a gross salary of €30,000 a year, your base is €2,500 a month and the benefit €83.33 a day. The 19 weeks (133 days) add up to €11,083.33 gross. €720.42 of contributions are deducted, leaving €10,362.92, about €2,337.50 net a month. As there is no income tax, you get more per month than from your usual payslip.

Legal and tax context

The leave is set out in article 48.4 of Spain's Workers' Statute, extended to 19 weeks by Royal Decree-law 9/2025, and the benefit in articles 177-182 of the General Social Security Act. It is exempt from income tax under article 7.h of the Income Tax Act. To receive it you must be registered with Social Security and, from age 21, have a minimum contribution record: 90 days in the last 7 years if you are 21-26, and 180 days from 26.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes: using your net salary instead of the contribution base; thinking the last 2 weeks are lost if not taken straight away (they can be used until the child is 8); believing weeks can be transferred to the other parent (the leave is individual and non-transferable); and not giving your employer at least 15 days' notice before taking the flexible weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How much is maternity or paternity leave pay in Spain?

100% of your contribution base for the previous month, divided by 30 for each day of leave. On a €30,000 gross salary that is about €83 a day and around €2,337 net a month, since no income tax is withheld.

How long is birth leave in Spain?

19 weeks for each parent: 6 mandatory after the birth, 11 flexible until the baby is 12 months old and 2 until the child turns 8. Single parents get 32 weeks.

Is parental leave pay taxed in Spain?

No, it is exempt from income tax. The INSS only deducts your share of the Social Security contribution (about 6.5%). Nothing is withheld and nothing is due on your tax return.

What if I have twins or triplets?

For each baby from the second one, each parent gets one more week (two for single parents). The same applies if the baby is born with a disability.

When and how do I apply?

Apply to the INSS, ideally online through the Social Security e-office, from the start of the leave. Your employer sends the contribution certificate and the INSS pays the benefit monthly in arrears.

What are the requirements?

Being registered with Social Security and having a minimum contribution record by age: none under 21, 90 days in the last 7 years (or 180 over your working life) between 21 and 26, and 180 days in the last 7 years (or 360 in total) from 26.
