One of the mechanisms introduced into the Spanish pension system to correct historical inequalities is the gender gap supplement, which replaced the earlier "maternity supplement" tied exclusively to the number of children. Its stated goal is to compensate for the impact that raising children and family care tends to have, more often, on women's contribution careers.
What the gender gap supplement is
It's an additional amount added to certain contributory pensions (retirement, permanent disability, and widowhood), recognized for each biological or adopted child, aimed at offsetting the negative effect that motherhood or childcare tends to have on someone's career and contribution record, particularly in the case of women.
Who can access it
Unlike the earlier maternity supplement, this supplement can be granted to both women and men, though with recognition criteria that favor whichever person in the couple had their contribution career more affected in connection with the birth or adoption of the children. In practice, since the impact on career progression statistically continues to affect women more often and more severely, the majority of beneficiaries remain women.
How the amount is calculated
The supplement is calculated as a percentage of the initial recognized pension, for each child, up to a maximum number of children that count toward it as set by regulation. The specific amount and applicable percentages have been revised in various regulatory reforms, so it's always worth checking the regulations in force at the time of retirement to know the exact amount that would apply.
Compatibility with other supplements and limits
The gender gap supplement is compatible with other minimum pension supplements, although its recognition and amount are subject to the maximum limits the law sets for the pension as a whole, so that the sum of all supplements cannot exceed certain regulatory caps.
How it's applied for
In practically all cases, the supplement is granted automatically by Spain's National Social Security Institute (INSS) when resolving the corresponding pension application, without needing a separate request, as long as the objective requirements are met (number of children, type of pension recognized).
A mechanism still evolving
This supplement has undergone various regulatory changes in recent years, partly driven by court rulings on how the previous supplement was structured. It's always worth checking the regulations and criteria in force at the time of your retirement, since they may differ from those applicable in previous years.
