DCA has a complicated name: Dollar Cost Averaging. But it's the simplest idea in the world.
Imagine you want to buy bread. Bread costs €1 today. But you don't know if tomorrow it costs €0.50 or €2.
What do you do? Buy bread every day. Some days expensive, some days cheap. Your average price ends up fair.
Stock market works the same.
The problem: trying to guess the price
People think "I'll wait until it drops to buy". But nobody knows when it drops.
Real example:
- Wait for drop. But it rises first. Missed opportunity.
- Or it drops, wait more. Drops more. Wait more. Drops 30%. Finally buy.
- But turns out that was the best time and you bought all at once at the peak anyway.
Trying to see the future. Impossible.
The solution: DCA (buy a little every month)
Instead of guessing, buy automatically every month.
Example:
- January: price high (€100). Buy €100 → have 1 share.
- February: price drops (€50). Buy €100 → have 2 more shares.
- March: price rises (€75). Buy €100 → have 1.33 more shares.
Average price = (100 + 50 + 75) / 3 = €75.
Without DCA, if you bought €300 only in January, you'd pay €300 for 3 expensive shares. With DCA, you spend €300 and get 4.33 shares at better price.
"But isn't it better to wait and buy when it's cheap?"
Yes. But nobody knows when it's cheap.
If you knew it would be €40, sure, wait. But you don't. Could be €40 or €150.
With DCA you don't "beat" the market. But you don't lose trying to be clever either.
The psychological benefit
Here's the best part: when the market drops, you're not scared.
Because you know: "Ok, price is low. My monthly contribution buys more shares. Great."
Without DCA, you see drops and think "oh no, I lost money". Panic-sell. Lose.
With DCA, you see drops and think "opportunity". Your mindset changes.
How to implement DCA
- Open investment account
- Set automatic transfer of €100/month (or whatever you can)
- Forget about it
Each month, automatically, money transfers. No thinking. No excuses.
30 years later, you have a lot of money.
The only important rule
Make it automatic. If it depends on you deciding "this month I'll invest", it doesn't work. Your brain will say "better wait".
Set it so money transfers automatically. No excuses.
